I’ve noticed how some wives lose hope when it feels like their husband isn’t willing to make the smallest changes.
It could be the most obvious thing in the world, but he still gets defensive and clams up to the point where it’s not even worth saying anything.
Like when a couple goes out to dinner with friends, and the wife arrives a few minutes late and then her husband jokes, “See, I told you she’d be late.”
That’s going to hurt, especially if it’s something they’ve argued about.
Later at home, she makes a reasonable request, “I wish you wouldn’t joke about things like that in front of our friends.”
But he immediately pushes back: “What? Can’t I have some fun? It’s not a big deal.”
That kind of moment can be soul-crushing.
Because she’s not asking him to change his personality or roll out a red carpet for her.
She just wants him to stop making jokes about something sensitive.
So the fact that he blows that up into “I can’t have fun around you” is a clue to what’s happening underneath.
What he hears
When you boil down everything she’s telling her husband, it’s basically, “What you did hurt me.”
And yet what he’s hearing her say is an accusation: “You tried to hurt me.”
Which, of course, is not the same thing at all.
Most men want to think of themelves as good husbands.
So when a man hears his wife say that he hurt her, in his mind she’s calling him a bad husband.
And he’s going to push back on that hard, because deep down he probably already wonders whether he’s doing a good enough job.
This can happen even when she hasn’t said a word.
Like when he forgets to switch the laundry, so there aren’t any clean clothes to wear the next day.
It’s his mistake but instead of admitting that, he gets annoyed that his wife didn’t remind him.
Because he’d rather it be somebody else’s fault than feel like he’s being a bad husband.
I’ve caught myself doing this too.
I’ll think, “Why didn’t my wife do this for me?” before I remember, “She’s not responsible for my actions. I am.”
The paradox
A husband who doesn’t care all that much about his wife isn’t going to be bothered if she thinks he’s a bad husband. He’s just going to shrug and go on with his day.
So in a strange way, the fact that it bothers him so much is proof that he still cares about being a good husband.
Yet the more he cares, the harder it can be for him to admit he did something wrong.
That doesn’t excuse his actions.
But two things can be true: a husband can do something that hurts his wife, and still not be a bad husband.
Realizing that was a flashbulb moment for me.
It took me most of my life to see that admitting I made a mistake wasn’t the same thing as admitting I was a bad husband.
Even now, if I do something that hurts my wife, there’s still a part of me that wants to point a finger at her first.
And understanding where that urge comes from is what eventually made it possible for me to change.
So if your husband reacts like this, it doesn’t mean he’ll never change.
It might mean that he hasn’t figured out that making mistakes that hurt you doesn’t automatically make him a bad husband.
